Midwifery Services

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) at PCC provide holistic, personalized, and compassionate care to women during pregnancy, birth, and throughout their lifespan, empowering women to make decisions about their health care. CNMs are licensed and certified independent health care providers who care for women of all ages. Midwifery care is integrated with PCC's primary care and maternal-child health services; therefore, they consult with and refer patients to family medicine physicians and obstetricians/gynecologists (OB/GYNs) when appropriate.

CNMs are registered nurses who have completed a master’s degree in nurse-midwifery and passed a national certifying exam by the American Midwifery Certification Board. For more information about what a nurse-midwife is and does, please visit the American College of Certified Nurse-Midwives website.

Prenatal Care:

The midwifery model of care is based on the understanding that for most women and pregnant individuals, pregnancy and childbirth are healthy and normal parts of the life cycle. CNMs are skilled in attending mothers who deliver without pain medication and can help patients achieve the birth experience they are seeking. Pregnant patients who present with low-risk and who desire an out-of-hospital delivery may choose to deliver with midwives at West Suburban Medical Center or at the Birth Center at PCC. Prenatal care is given in the clinic setting as it is with the midwives who deliver at West Suburban Medical Center. However, instead of going to the hospital in labor, mothers will meet their midwives at the Birth Center at PCC, located at PCC South Family Health Center.
