Chicago, IL –The PCC Austin Farm is preparing to launch its farm stand’s sixth season on June 7. In addition to counseling patients about the benefits of healthy eating, PCC Community Wellness Center (PCC) is also providing easy access to produce within the Austin community. Produce grown on the farm will be harvested and sold at the PCC Austin Farm Stand. First harvest picks include mustard and collard greens, kale, lettuce, scallions, and garlic.
This summer, the farm stand will be open every Tuesday starting June 7 until October 25 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., as well as the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In April, the PCC Austin Farm held an art contest to redesign the farm’s tote bag. “The winning entries will be revealed during our first farm stand,” said Lucy Flores, Community Outreach Health Education Manager. The first place winner will be given a $700 scholarship and will have his or her design featured on the tote bag. Second and third place winners will be given a $350 scholarship.
With the PCC Austin Farm in its second year of operation, PCC will continue to address Austin and its neighboring communities’ need for nutritional, affordable produce. Access to quality produce and healthy eating habits can help alleviate health issues, such as obesity, that thrive urban neighborhoods like Austin, which lack adequate access to affordable, healthy food. “In addition to offering fresh, quality and organically grown produce for sale, the PCC Austin Farm also offers visitors free children’s books, recipe samples, and nutrition literacy materials,” said Flores.
The PCC Austin Farm, located at 330 N. Lotus Avenue in Chicago, was established in partnership with Chicago Botanic Garden’s Windy City Harvest program. Experts in urban agriculture, Windy City Harvest staff helped develop the farm and a seasonal coordinator maintains the site. Funding for the project was awarded by the Humana Foundation in 2014.
